Reverse Rev-Limiter Bypass for Kodiak 350/400/450

April 2/06

Written by Greg

(Kodiak 350: See Addendum May 15/09 at bottom of page)

The Yamaha Kodiak 400/450 has a reverse rev limiter, which limits you to 25 km/h. Sometimes when you are stuck, you need to spin the tires in reverse to get out, but the limiter prevents you from doing so. This mod will allow you bypass the reverse rev limiter.

1.) Mount an SPST switch in a convenient location.
2.) Attach one side of the switch to the Green/White wire of the CDI (tap in to it, do not cut it).
3.) Attach the other side of the switch to ground.

That's it. When the Green/White wire is grounded, your rev limiter is bypassed. For safety reasons, keep the switch set to the normal (ungrounded) position unless you require the bypass.

Note: Your reverse indicator will not work while the bypass is switched on.

Notes

• Use a waterproof switch.
• Do not use Scotchlock connectors to splice into your wiring harness, as they are prone to failure due to vibration. Solder and heat-shrink your connections and you will have no problems.
• Use a grounded-tip soldering iron and resin-core solder. Do not use a soldering gun and acid-core solder.

Addendum May 15/09: Kodiak 350

The follow has been successfully tried with a 2007 Kodiak 350. Written by Yesitsmeken.

Basically... remove the tank cover and find the only "pale green with little brown rings" wire under the instrument cluster. Tap a wire to it and feed it back along the left side of the tank. Now locate the two sensors right behind the cylinder (mine's aircooled)... the inner one has a red sheath over the wire (its green with a white stripe)... thats the wire you want to connect to the "pale green with little brown rings" wire under the instrument cluster.
