Moose Complete Winter Pack

Heated grips and thumbwarmer, with dual-zone controller

March 17/06

Written by Greg

I was looking for a nice set of heated grips, and when I saw Singleton's setup, I knew I had to have it. He bought his kit from Carter Motorsports in Coquitlam, so that's where I went as well, and it was even in stock.

Moose Utility Division's "Complete Winter Pack" consists of a pair of heated grips, thumbwarmer, controller, and mounting hardware. The temperature of the grips and thumbwarmer are independantly controlled, with five levels of heat for each.

The installation was quite straightforward per the instructions. The grips are a one-time-install style, no adhesive required. Basically, they have a built-in adhesive layer. The instructions tell you to spray WD-40 into the grips, wait for two minutes, then slide them on, making sure they're aligned the way you want them (this is time-sensitive). I found that using a rag on the grips allowed me to twist them further onto the bars than just my bare hands would allow. Once the WD-40 evaporates, they are NOT coming off. Repeat, NOT. So you need to ensure that you get it right the first time.

Note: Rather than using WD-40, you can use Purell hand sanitizer, which is an evaporating gel. Purell gives you considerably more time than WD-40, and in fact once the grip is in place you should let it sit overnight. The grip slides much easier than with WD-40, so ensure that you do not slide the grip too far in.

The grip "hardness" is similar to the stock grips.

The thumbwarmer attaches to the front of the thumb throttle with built-in peel-and-stick adhesive, and a piece of heat-shrink tubing (with glue inside) covers the throttle and warmer. It's advisable to clean the thumb-throttle surface before applying the thumbwarmer.

The wiring is pretty easy. The grips and control module plug in to a 6-pin connector; the positive lead taps into an ignition-switched voltage source (I used the 12v accessory power line), and the ground lead gets bolted to a handy ground location. There is plenty of extra length in the wiring harness. I did have to add a few feet of wire to the ground lead to take it to my usual ground location.

The actual installation time was about 2 hours on my Honda Rincon.

Operation of the control module is easy. When turned on, the grips and thumbwarmer are off by default. Select the grips, set the power level; select the thumbwarmer, set the power level. The LEDs can be dimmed for night use by pressing the Select and Power Set buttons at the same time.

The kit works great, the dual-zone controller is slick, and the installation was a snap. When used in conjunction with hand guards (my hand guards are also made by Moose), you will no longer experience cold hands and a cold right thumb when riding in winter weather. This is definitely the kit to get if you want both heated grips and a thumbwarmer.
