Peace on Earth

Fort St John area

December 24/04

Written by Joebear

Several of us went riding on the day before Christmas. The weather was good; a little cool but it warmed up during the day.

We went down the Johnson Creek Road south of Fort St. John. The road and trail were very icy. The creeks were overfull and frozen; great places to do donuts! Danny was able to spin fast enough to get one tire off the ice.

We found a few places to get some airtime, and a few rest/warm up stops were needed. One stop was near the Peace River. It flows all year long and never freezes over. Once we left the river we rode up the creek and had to dodge open water and log jams. We went further down-river to a spot above the river for some lunch. After that we headed back to the trucks. The only mishap was me rolling onto my side after doing a slow spin on the ice.

On Dec 28th I took my family down the same trail. I showed them the same places we had traveled a few days before. They could not believe the river was not frozen as the Pechora River (about 5 times bigger) near their hometown of Pechora, Russia, freezes over every year. We saw five moose on the ice in the same place where we had been doing donuts a few days before. When we stopped for lunch, we built a fire to warm up a bit, as it was colder than the other day. Eugene had to see if he could throw stuff off the cliff and hit the water below. The only thing that hit was a log I threw and it had to roll a long ways before it went into the water. It was a short day, only 3 hours or so, but we enjoyed it a lot!
