The M.O.O.S.E. ATV Club 4th-Annual Family Fun / Poker Ride

Fort St John Area

September 16/07

Written by Joebear

Sunday September 16th 2006, the M.O.O.S.E. ATV CLUB held their 4th-Annual Family Fun / Poker Ride.

The weather was not as nice as last year as we had a little rain in the morning, and it was windy and cool most of the day. The ride was held on the south side of Taylor down the Gagne Rd (or #230 road), on part of the Stewart Lake Trail System. Everything was set up early in the morning as several members had camped out at the starting point.

Registration and Barbeque

With a count of 92 adults and 23 kids, a total of 115 participants turned out for the fun filled day. Doug Bowen, Theresa Soderholm, and myself (Joe Bourque), assisted in the registration and picking of poker hands. After all riders were registered and had purchased their poker hands, they started out down the trail to the checkpoint. This year the trail was wet and muddy with many mud holes to play in. We made one long route this year, about 40km in length. We had scouted this trail out a few weeks before in order to keep the riders off the busy logging road while still enabling a longer ride.

Vector Geomatics Land Surveying Ltd. made up some professional maps of the Poker Route. They will also be sponsoring our trail maps in the future.

Checkpoint on the trail

Lou Cardinal was the first to the checkpoint

The riders started out around 10:30am in the morning and started returning around 1:30pm in the afternoon. Unfortunately there was a breakdown on the trail with one quad having to be towed back with a broken chain. These few riders made it back around 3:30. One of our members, Derry Randal, was able to assist them in taking a longer but easier trail back to the registration area. Thanks, Derry!

These riders found a mud hole to play in!

Once back at the registration area, everyone drew his or her last poker cards, and while waiting for us to figure out the winning hands, Rob Hergott and Jason Cyr cooked up some hotdogs and hamburgers. Schlumberger supplied the BIG barbeque to cook on and ESS Support Services, Sobey’s, Safeway, and Real Canadian Warehouse donated the food and pop.

As the kids were not allowed to play poker, we ensured they all received a prize. We gave out swim passes, stickers, and models to all the kids.

Tracey Warncke was the big winner of the poker round with a hand of 4 - 7's queen high. Tracey had first pick of over $3000.00 in prizes. From there the next highest hands were drawn, enabling each winner to pick what he or she wanted from the table of prizes. Local dealerships and businesses were very generous in donating prizes!!

The money earned from this years ride will go to trail maintenance, updating our website with mapping, and promoting safety on the trail.

Please remember when riding on the trails down the 230road (Gagne Road) that the South Peace Stock Farms owns the first part of the trail. They will continue to allow us access if we stay on the trail and keep all gates and fences closed! Dan Stocking is the manager and has been working with us on this.

Keeping our trails cleared, clean, and helping out in any fence repairs etc, will help to ensure our riding area will still be accessible!
Remove any garbage you find on the trail. Pack it in, pack it out! Make sure any fires are completely out!
Please obey all signs! Wear your helmets!
Ride safe and have FUN!!
