MOOSE ATV Club Family Fun/Poker Ride 2005

Fort St John

September 4/05

Written by Joebear

On Sunday September 4th, 2005, the M.O.O.S.E. ATV Club held the 2nd annual Family Fun/Poker Ride. The weather cooperated this year and it was nice and sunny. The ride was held on the south side of Taylor down the Gagne Road, on part of the Stewart Lake Trail. This year the club incorporated a poker ride into their event to help raise money for much-needed trail maintenance. Many of the trails in the area were hard hit by the early wet snowfall last year. Acres of trees are down in some areas and have blocked many of the trails.

With a count of 35 adults and 10 kids, a total of 45 participants turned out for the fun-filled day. After all riders were registered and had purchased their poker hands, they started out down the trail to the checkpoint. John Stephens had the only breakdown of the day, and luckily it happened before leaving the parking lot. Along the trail there were several great mud-holes to try out on the way to the checkpoint. Some riders went right through the middle, and others took the high ground around. Dan Webster had his brand new Rhino out; it had no trouble with mud or hills, but required some help getting under some of the trees across the trail, due to it having roll bars located higher than most quads. Get a chainsaw, Dan!

Les Kelly hauled our lunch in with his Jeep Rubicon, and set up a table with all the food for us to enjoy. This was located near a small creek midway on the ride. Several people gathered firewood and built a fire to cook the hotdogs, while Theresa Lapointe and I set up for everyone to pick his or her next set of poker cards.

During lunch a few people went on little excursions down side trails, but most just sat around telling stories and meeting new people. After everyone had their fill of hotdogs, we started back to the kick-off point where Sean Murphy was manning the sign-up booth. Once there, everyone drew his or her last poker cards and waited patiently while we figured out the winning hands.

The kids all won a prize, as they were not allowed to play poker. Each received a small bag with candy, stickers, pens, and a $10 gift certificate. Dan Brown was the big winner of the poker round. He won half of the poker pot, allowing him to take home $400.00. From there the next highest hands were drawn, enabling each winner to pick what he or she wanted from the table of prizes. Almost everyone received a prize, as local dealerships and businesses were very generous in donating prizes!

By next year we will have more trails cleared of trees, and will be able to have a couple of alternate routes based on class and experience for the 3rd annual ride.

If anyone is interested in our club they can contact us at mooseatv at hotmail dot com or check out our forum at www.quads.ca.

If you are interested in finding out about our club and club-sponsored activities, we meet the second Tuesday of each month, 7pm at the Sportex Building beside the curling rink in Fort St. John.

Once again Thank You to all the great people who made this event a success!
