Golden 2006: Keep the Rubber Side Down RallyGolden AreaAugust 18-21/07 Written by Big Brother This year in August, at our annual get together, the Fisette clan, Claw'd, Big Brother, Ray, Steven and friends met in Golden for a week of extreme riding. The goal is to ride trails that we haven't been on before. Depending on the weather, some of the rides we do will be overnight rides. Day 1Because we come from all directions and as far away as Saskatoon, the first day is spent by meeting in Golden and getting supplies (beer, food and necessities). We may also warm up the quads for a little ride down to the river.
This year the weather did not cooperate the way we wanted. The first real day of riding and it was raining, which meant that we were not going to camp out. That doesn't stop the ride; put on the rain gear and let's head out.
Day 2We decided to ride the Wiseman Lakes trail (Donald FSR) west of Golden to the Dogtooth FSR and then up Lang Creek. With the quads loaded and lunch packed, we head out to find a place to unload.
Every once and a while there seems to be a stream that has to be crossed and this day is no exception.
Once across the second creek it's time for lunch.
After lunch there was more water to cross.
During the ride you witness some incredible scenery.
Day 3Well, it's another wet day so we decide to take a ride up the Bluewater Main west of Golden just off of the Big Ben Hwy. This is an easy ride with lots of waterfalls and some creek crossings.
Day 4The weather is turning for the better. The weather forecast is finally for some sun. We load the quads up with gear and provisions and head out along the Kinbasket Lake on the Columbia West FSR some 45 minutes west of Golden.
Along the way the road is washed out in six places. One becomes a bit of a challenge.
After looking at the map book, we are able to find an old logging road around the second pictured washout. With a little bush clearing and a make-shift bridge we are able to continue the adventure.
After the washouts we encounter a rock slide that posses a different problem; one that we have encountered before. Time to build a trail over the slide.
With a little of hard work and team work we are able get our quads over the slide.
It takes us 6 hours to travel 30 km to our destination.
Day 5After a good night sleep and a hearty breakfast we are ready to do some exploring.
Our exploration takes us to an old trapper's cabin on the Bachelor Creek Rd.
After exploring the cabin we continue our travels up the washout-riddled trail.
We call this the "Keep The Rubber Side Down" rally and for a reason; someone happens to point the rubber side up and on this ride Big Brother gets into trouble.
Our exploration ends when a bridge is washed out, and it is getting too late to find a way across the stream.
There's nothing better than a hot meal and something cool to drink after a long day exploring.
Day 6All good things unfortunately have to come to an end.
