Trout Lake Trip

Kootenay Area

August /08

Written by Powerstroke2000

I thought I would post some photos of the Trout Lake area. For anyone wanting a QUALITY ATV ride, you certainly wouldn't be disappointed. I personally found that around August 12th was perfect, as when you are up in the alpine meadows, there are areas where the flowers are like a carpet on the landscape, all of different colors and varieties.

For those interested, there is an abundant history of mining in the area as well. Trout Lake itself is a jewel among the many smaller communities in the area, as it's like going back in time in some ways, with the old Trout Lake Hotel still in operation, and the gas station being unique with it's old-style pumps. Pictures don't do this ride/campout justice, you need to experience it yourself! More can be read here: Trout Lake Information

Camping/quadding on the beach is allowed.

Fishing is also a good past-time while in the area.

Heading up one of the many old mining roads. You can ride your quad in town, and we rode along the road that skirts Trout lake itself.

Filling up in town.

The pump has to be manually pumped to fill the glass reservoir prior to draining it into your tank.

Temporary mining camp set up on one of the many mining trails we came upon. Nice folks running it we found.

Stopped for a lunch break.

One of the many old mine shafts.

Another stop along the way.

Getting to the top of the mountain, and the trail seems to go on forever. We never did follow this particular trail to its end.

After coming back one day, it was time for a beer and some relaxation. We continued onto new-found trails the next day.

One of the mine roads leading up into the hills... this is looking back towards Trout Lake.

Large bowl we came to after rounding a corner. Another quadder enjoying the trails if you look closely.

Top of one hill, we still have more elevation to climb from here to do more exploring!

Some places where tough climbing, but overall it's a ride for all.

View - hills, flowers and glaciers.

Toyota pickup followed us to this spot.

Looking back at the lake.

One of the many trails within the wildflowers.

Trail continues...

Flowers and mountains.

Monument to Alice Jowett, who had mines in the area, owned the Hotel in town as well as the bordello. Her ashes are in the area.

Alice Jowetts cabin was here many years ago. Not much is left over all the years though.

Looking down one of the many creek beds.

Good trail - lots of flowers, and a glacier across the valley.

Small waterfall - moss and wildflowers.

Jess, my cousins lab, enjoyed the trip too!

More trails...

Another valley to explore.

Jess - cooling down in the snow.

Old mining cabin along side of one of the many mining trails.

Mine shaft entrance.

Heading back down to tree level - to make a fire and cook our wieners for hotdogs that day.

Heading out after a break.

Trails in different directions - we explored as many as our day would allow.

Stream - starting within the ground itself.

Another trail to explore.

We went inside this mine shaft. This photo is from within the mine, looking toward the entrance.

Stalactites starting to form on the mine ceiling.

We had to scramble across this old avalanche to get to the mine entrance. It's a long way down if you loose your footing.

Cooking lunch!

High altitude trail riding. We're above the 6000 foot level here... so says our GPS.

Decent trail - but to the left it's a LONG way down if you misjudge.

One trail leads to another different view.

Good trail - now what's around that next corner?

Trail again gets dicey.

Slowly and carefully, we rode further along this trail - again, opening up to a whole different view.

More sky, mountains and flowers.

A slough in the middle of nowwhere.

Small lake in one valley bottom we came to.

Same view from higher.

More trail riding.

Another trail, another look back at Trout Lake from above.

My cousin on his Bombardier.

Trails seem to go on forever.

Flowers and mountains.

Rode up to - and onto a glacier. It was incredibly warm this day, so the snow was a nice relief.

This glacier was quite long, and trying to ride "up" it took some full-throttle runs.

A small lake alongside the mountain trail.

Campfire/camping area beside the lake.

One of the many creeks and waterfalls we saw on this trip.

Back to toughing it out at our camp spot on Trout Lake!

Fish caught not far from shore where we where camping.

My cousin brought his boat along, so we did some exploring on the water too!

Small town of Ferguson was up one FSR from Trout Lake. Again, an old mining town, but folks are now putting cabins up there.

Black bear on shore of Trout Lake.

One evening, the lake was calm and the moon rose up over the mountain right after sunset.

A crossing of the Arrow Lakes is part of the trip getting to Trout Lake.

Another shot of the ferry... soon to pick us up. Hope to do this ride again.... soon!

That's a small sampling of the area, and some of the mining roads/trails we went up, off of the main road along the east side of Trout Lake. At the far end of Trout Lake was Gerrard, which is now all gone except for a sparse number of out-buildings still standing in the bush.

Apparently... on Mothers Day, Gerrard Trout come to this end of the lake to spawn, some being 3 feet and longer in size...so we we're told. For those interested, more info is here: Gerrard Trout Info

Unfortunately, we hoped to, but didn't find time to ride so many more of the roads at this end of the lake, as my cousin's husband has explored these shown above, and many of the others in the area, so we'll plan a future trip to check out those. As many have said, there can't be many other area's in B.C. as beautiful as this area... and I only wish I saw more wildlife, but I'd expect with the heat of August, many were cooling off in the forested areas. The blackflies and other bugs generally were a nuisance, but that's where one wants to be moving fairly continually anyway, as there is just SO much to see. We were there a week, and only got started on the many riding adventures this area has to offer.
