A Miner AccidentCoquihalla AreaAugust /04 Written by Oweee
Here's what happened along the back side of Carolin Mine. Lets just say the trip was one that Barb and I will never forget. We were in the Siwash Creek area, about 20 kms past the mine (I call it the "Valley of Doom"). The trail heads over the mountain and down the backside. We were riding along the trail, when my Kawasaki KVF700 4x4 hit a root and went over the edge! It went down the embankment about 100 feet, and I went down about 50 feet ahead of the quad. Other than a loss of pride, I was fine; not even a scratch! The quad did pretty good; it had a front tire off a rim, a bent rack, and a bend in the rear axle (that we didn't notice until later). Not bad, considering! What saved the quad and I was some small saplings on the way down, and a few angels hanging around the area.
We called Valley Helicopters for the recovery, and they had it out from start to finish in 30 minutes! The helicopter cost $540, including taxes and fuel. Once back on the trail, we rebeaded the front tire and rode the quad back to the truck. I could have recovered the quad myself, but it would probably have taken me two days of winching and brush cutting, so the helicopter was a good deal, and besides, it makes for a way better story. The helicopter pilot couldn't believe that the quad was in such good shape after falling that distance. There's something to be said for KVF700 plastic, because it all remolded back to its original state. What a day that was! |
