The Crying Girl

Fort St John area

May 19/04

Written by Joebear

Wednesday: Olga, Eugene, Danny, Shad, and I headed out to Crying Girl Prairie Rec Site (Christina Falls) for the long weekend. Later that day Lana and Ben showed up. On the way out we came across a herd of elk; they were a little scared but did not run off too quick. We experienced some rain on the trip in, and some while setting up camp. After camp was set up, we went on a short ride to Whiteman Falls through Harold's land ("Alligator Alley") and back around on the main trail to camp again.

Thursday: Danny, Shad, Olga, Eugene, and I headed out to Christina Falls. We had a few stuck moments, and did some trail maintenance. We had lunch at the falls, and encountered some rain on the way back. Once we returned we found the campsite starting to fill up. Les and his redneck set-up never fails to get some looks! Olga washed our bike using the hose from the shower I built, and Eugene continued to ride as much as he could.

Friday: It rained most of the day but we found time to put on the rainsuits and go for a short ride anyways. In the evening, Olga and I went around to all the campsites with decals donated by TRIM TEK. "Christina Falls 2004 M.O.O.S.E. ATV CLUB". We sold out in a short time; I thank them very much for their support!!

Saturday: Saturday was the day of the big ride. About 10 minutes before we gathered everyone together for a group picture, Eugene rolled his quad and broke off his throttle lever. We were able to repair it with some spare junk and ingenuity.

The trip to the falls was a long one as everyone had to try to go through the muskeg and mud holes. Dameon (Fishook) had oil in his air box after being stuck so his bike smoked like it was about to blow up. All was well after a few minutes. Danny's son Shad had the Grizz buried, and in the process of getting it out broke a CV joint. Many breaks for road pops too. I had to stop and help a few people on the trail; one had a chain problem but it was way too loose and he ended up abandoning it until the trip back. One group needed some air in their tires so while they used my pump to air up the tires, I taped the cowboy hat on for Kaytee so she wouldn't have to hold it while riding. Sheldon was in a big hurry to get to the falls, and Kim did not know why until he proposed to her at the top of the falls. She was so happy!!!

After lunch we started back to camp. Olga and I went further up the trail to Watson's Valley; we heard some noise off to the left so we investigated, and found Marlin Watson sawing up some wood. We talked with him for a few minutes then headed back to camp.

Sunday: Stephen and his friends from Edmonton, Steve and Erin, headed out to the falls. Erin had a pug that she dressed up to look COOL! Some of us headed down to the southern-most point on the trail near the Graham River. On the way we met up with some more people and had to cut logs out of the way to get where we were going. On the way back we stopped on the "million dollar bridge" where Eugene decided to toss a few rocks over the side. After we returned, we went to Fossil Falls. It's only about 50 yards off the main road and down a bank to the bottom. Very cool with the ice and the mist.

After returning to camp, Stephen and his friends arrived. They told us of a couple from Dawson Creek had rolled and may be hurt. The friends they were riding with had had many drinks and were not being much help. So Stephen, Olga, Steve, and I loaded the first aid kit up and went to see if we could help. The people were on the way back and seemed to be ok. The girl was hurting but said she was okay. Then her friends showed up, and yes, they were too drunk to care if someone was hurt. I was very dissapointed to see the way they treated the people that were hurt. NO RESPECT!! I know some of us ride and have a few drinks but these people were drunk with no helmets and a couple of them had a small infant with them. I was NOT impressed!!! The girl that was hurt appologized several times for their behavior. While she was resting I helped another fix the shifter on his Honda. Once she assured us she would be okay, we headed back to camp.

For the first time ever on May long weekend there were a couple of fights. They were from these same people; they were fighting among themselves, but it still wasn't good. I hope that next year things will improve! Later that evening Steve wanted to try out his Polaris, so we went down the south trail. He got stuck in one hole and Danny pulled him out fairly easily. So then he rips around and right back into the same hole. Then we had a heck of a time getting him out! Once he was out, Stephen, Olga and I headed back to camp while the rest of them went to the creek to clean their bikes.

Monday: In the morning, we packed up and headed home. Around km 84-86 there were several Grizzly bears spotted, so we slowed down to see if we could see one; nothing but two moose were visible.

All in all it was another great weekend at Christina Falls. I am hoping for more people to join us next year as it will be the 10th anniversary of us going out there. It all started with Jason, Les and I.
