XRC and I headed to the Coquihalla area for some riding with Oweee and Ozark Girl, who were camping near the Carolin Mine Road exit with some friends. We parked and off-loaded the quads at the Sowaqua Creek exit, then rode the pipeline road to the campsite. We met up with everyone, then headed off to Shylock Road. I can't remember the names of the other two riders because I'm writing this report six months after the fact (Barb, maybe you can tell me their names).

Shylock is an old stop on the abandoned Kettle Valley Railway, and is named after a character in William Shakespear's "The Merchant of Venice". As is the next exit, Portia. Shylock is basically a logged valley, with numerous active and deactivated logging roads and spurs to explore. We were there on a weekend, so we didn't have to worry about meeting up with logging trucks. There's a gate at the start of the road, with a short bypass for quads on the left side. We passed by the road leading to the active area, and explored the older section. The riding was pretty basic, suitable for new riders.

During a creek crossing, XRC managed to get his quad high-centered on a rock, and when he gave it gas he suddenly pivoted it 90 degrees, much to his surprise. It actually looked pretty neat. Oweee coached and hefted him off the rock and all was well. Everyone else took a different line, and had no trouble. To his credit, XRC has only ridden a quad a few times, and he was actually borrowing this one from me. We found an all-to-brief rock crawling section; it mostly easy going unless you misjudged the rocks and got yourself off-camber.

Every road we took ended at an old spar area (which was to be expected). At one of our stops, we could see a large road network in another section of the valley, but we decided to save it for another time. It was a relaxing day of riding, and we were treated to some pretty nice views.
