Oil Shortage

Hope Area

April 24/07

Written by Rigster

First of all, thanks to everyone that showed up! Wait a sec, I guess that means just my brother "8Ball" and I. No matter, we still had fun and an adventure!!

Best part is, my brother did VERY well his first ride out and did not crash his quad! :)

Day started out as usual, getting everything loaded up and ready to go. This was the first ride I was going to be on since my first service so I wanted to see what this machine would be like.

Here we are getting loaded up and ready to go from my brothers place in Chilliwack...

We grabbed some fuel, headed up to Nicklemine Rd and the off-load area at the bottom of the hill... we got suited up, and unloaded. We headed up the hill to the campsite areas and bombed around a little then hit a trail through the trees. I figure we were only riding maybe 20-30 mins before I had an engine warning light on my machine, and the text readout on it was saying to "check the engine oil." The engine went into "limp home mode" and I just got it out of the tight trail to a wider area so I could get off and check what was wrong. I shut of the engine and my brother caught up to me looking at my engine oil dipstick (which did not seem to be reading anything).

My brother leaned under my quad, only to exclaim "Dood, your drain plug is missing!"

I thought to myself, "Self, this is a good reason there is nothing on the dipstick..." Then my thoughts turned to frustration at the blasted mechanic that forgot to tighten the friggin drain plug during the first maintenance.

We hiked back up the trail to retrieve the drain plug (followed the nice rainbow oil trail) and found the plug (about a ½ mile back up the trail), hiked back, and put it back in (tightened this time!).

Well, a long story short, but a couple of hours wasted, we got the quads back to the truck via a quick tow, then an exciting haul-ass neutral roll down the rd to the truck, loaded the quads back up, headed into Hope, picked up some synthetic oil (had a short, to-the-point call to the dealer) and back up to Nicklemine.

We were riding again around lunch...

We headed back up the hill and tried to get on up to the mine, however there was a bit of a surprise blocking the trail:

I was going to winch out the little rock I was standing on but my winch cable would not reach around it. Oh well... back to the other trails then!

My brother getting his first log humping errr... jumping exercise!!

All in all we rode for another 4 hours or so (plus stops and breaks) before we called it a day, the weather was not too bad, and the scenery was great! My brother at one of our stops to enjoy the view:

Myself at the same stop (I know, it looks like a flippin quads commercial or pamphlet or something!!) Sheesh...

We did not take a lot of pictures due to the moisture level in the air that kept landing on us, but all in all it was a great day, no disasters and we had some fun in spite of the technical difficulties! There are quite a few downed trees, a lot of washout happening, but still a lot of rideable trails. A lot of the downed trees have already been cut out of the way; we did a little trail-cleanup of our own on the way through some of them.
