Oweee's Invite

Coquihalla Area

April 21-24/05

Written by Paul Mitchell

Owen ("Oweee") and Barb ("Ozark Girl") posted that they were going to Larson Hill from Thursday to Sunday with their friends Jeff and Linda, and extended an invite to the web readers to join in.

Eric and Linda were first in, and Dave ("Bambam") and Jeannie next as soon as they got home to a computer. Mike ("The House") and Darci ("The House Wife") were all over it in a hurry, and Bruce and Sherry committed that evening, and well, I just had to go. We didn't get there until Saturday morning as Sherry had a "girls night out" planned, so we left home at 6:00am and arrived around 8:30. By the look in Bambam's eyes, I think they had a good campfire party going on Friday night!

After a fast setup we planned to go up to Davis Lake, and carry on past to another loop east, then back to Davis for a hot dog lunch and a few refreshments. Owen volunteered to lead and our train of quads took off in a cloud of dust. We headed down the KVR to the Brookmere exit, then went east up Shovelnose Mountain to Davis Lake. It didn't take long for me to figure out that Owen was one smart dude volunteering to be the front man, and how dumb I was to be tail-end-charlie. To say it was dusty is a huge understatement, as I can now imagine how those prairie farmers felt while watching their farms blow away in the 1930's.

By the time I got to the Brookmere exit, everyone was waiting and I assumed it was just a rider check. Then noticed a few standing around Mike and his Honda. As they lifted it off the ground, I assumed that something serious was happening. Sure enough, the selectable transmission was not working and after taking it apart and cleaning some components, Mike called it a day. Eric doubled Darci back to camp so she could get the truck and come back to load the Honda. Good thing it went down where it did, and not up the mountain.

After Mike and Darci were squared away, we continued up Shovelnose Mountain, with Owen showing us a new trail that intercepts the pipeline and continues on into Davis Lake. Now I figured that I knew where Owen was going to go, but he surprised me again by carrying on past Davis to a little hill climb area, and then onto another new trail northeast of Shay Lake. It was a beautiful stretch, and we were lucky enough to see a lynx, but not fast enough with the camera.

We looped south, stopping for a little trail maintenance with Eric's chainsaw and a quick photo stop at the old mill site. We wound up back at Davis for a break and a hot dog roast. As it was getting close to 2:30 it was time to head back, so we took the south trail back to camp and arrived around 4:00 pm.

After a few drinks around the fire, it was dinner time. Linda gathered odds and ends for a small pot luck, which we capped off with a great wine that Eric picked up in Williams Lake. Nothing like the imported stuff! A great campfire was going as the sun went down and fun was had by all, with everyone wishing that Mike and Darci were with us. There is always next time, and as it turns out, when Mike took the Honda into the repair shop, Darci did a little shopping and now has her own quad. Way to go girl! Bruce, Sherry, and I were done in from the long day, so we couldn't make it past 10:00pm. Dave, I promise next time I will last longer.

Sunday we were up and ready to go at 10:00am. We decided to go to Fig Lake, then around to Murray Lake, and hopefully over the pass back to Larson Hill. One other rider had been up there the day before, and was doubtful that we could make through the snow. After our lunch at Murray Lake, we headed up to see if we could do it. There was snow at the summit that would have been a problem, but Eric remembered a detour we took last year. It was actually me taking a wrong road last year that was now paying off, but of course I got no credit. We stopped one last time on the side hill for a short break, and played with my 12ga slug gun, then carried on back to camp. Dave had led most of the day, and had done real well, only TWICE going the wrong way!

We arrived back at 3:30; we loaded up and after a few quick "see you in two weeks" we were on the road home. What a fun two days, and I can hardly wait until the Unofficial Quads.ca Larson Hill weekend to ride these trails again with friends.
