150 Mile House to Squawk Lake

March 23 and 24, 2009 we went on a trip from 150 Mile House to Squawk Lake. Rated 2-4; the only technical parts were getting unstuck in deep snow.

We all had 4-wheel-drive machines.

We started off around 10AM. We turned south off Pigeon Rd over to a couple of nearby gravel pits. From there we followed a road for about 2km to an older logging trail. Then for about 10km until we reached the power lines. We started heading south along the power lines. Halfway along power line, we noticed some of our group was no longer following. We went back and found that one machine had lost the bead on a front tire. We plugged in our trusty mini-compressor and were able to pump the tire back up and onto the rim. We carried on, and soon made it to Knife Creek Rd.

At this point the road became a snowmobile trail, and we followed it for a few kilometres.

There were a few newly-logged areas, a few deactivated logging roads, and some very fun trails.

Then the trail went off into the trees again. We saw some older cougar tracks (yesterday's), and followed them along the trail. Soon we noticed that the tracks were now fresh (like hours old). We continued on, and at this point the trail only had 1 set of snowmobile tracks so the going got a bit tougher for the quads. We all took turns sliding off the tracks and getting stuck in snow up to a couple feet deep. Everyone helped push and pull each other back onto the trails. Since we knew we were only about 1/2 km from the lake, we continued on.

We got to the lake and took some pictures of the cabin. This cabin is owned by a Dr. Lee. There is a notice saying that the cabin is for anyone to use and respect. We had a quick bite to eat, sat around in the sunshine and took in the scenery.

There were many more fresh cougar tracks. Most went to all the fishing holes in the ice on the lake. Presumably the cats were thirsty. While everyone spent most of their time looking up into the trees, we never saw the cougars.

Instead of heading back through the snow trail we came in on, we went around the edge of Squawk lake and found our way back to the logging clearings that we came in on.

We followed the power line back to our home base, and returned home about 4PM.

Round trip was about 50km.

Everyone had a blast and we are now planning a camping/riding trip the last week in May.
