Today the intrepid riders Glenn, Beyond Hope, and Polecat found themselves at Herrling Island for a day of fun. Actually, for Glenn the day began with some volunteer Bobcat work on the access culvert, in preparation for next Sunday's FVDRA Poker Run. They are expecting alot of campers and motorhomes, and thanks to Glenn's work they should have no problems getting over to the island.

So while Glenn did his thing, Beyond Hope and I took off to do some exploring. We rode a few of the tight and twisty trails, and before long I was drawn like a fly to a cow pie to Mud Alley, where of course, I had to try going straight up the middle. Needless to say I didn't get very far; that goo is absolutely bottomless, and it was right about then I remembered that Beyond Hope, who was right behind me, had yet to have his winch installed. Fortunately he had enough sense not to follow as far as I went, but he still couldn't get enough traction to pull me out. So my only option was to winch myself all the way through. Luckily I had a 20 foot tow strap with me; my winch cable wouldn't have reached. The biggest challenge was trying to walk thru the goo to get to a solid winch anchor; my boots kept getting vacuumed off!

After getting out of there, we headed back to the trucks to see what Glenn was up to. He was almost finished, so we had some lunch while Glenn traded his bobcat for his Grizzly. We then headed out and rode some of the twisty stuff, but by then it was getting pretty busy out there; lots of dirtbikes and quads, 2x4s and 4x4s. Most of the trails had been marked with tape and arrows for the Poker run, and we often found ourselves going the wrong way down a trail. So we decided to bail out of there and go explore the southern end of the Island. I was amazed at how far we were able to go... note the Agassiz Bridge in the photos.

The rest of the day was spent pokin' around, riding some of the dunes nearer to the south end. Beyond Hope couldn't resist a little airtime off a ten foot rise that we found. By about 3 o'clock, we were getting kinda lazy; we would ride for 10 minutes and stop and B.S. for 20. It was such a beautiful, warm day we didn't want to pack 'er in, in spite of getting lazy and hungry. But we slowly and reluctantly made our way back to the trucks. All in all a pretty good day of riding, aside from the 12 bucks at the car wash to clean up. Ya wanna play ya gotta pay!

I think we'll be back next weekend!
