Life's a Beach

Harrison Area

February 20/05

Written by Polecat

Well, after several weekends in a row of riding in the rainy, dark and soggy local forests, Polecat, Slime Green Cat, Rich and Claude emerged into the bright sunshine for a day of relatively relaxing riding up the West Harrison FSR. We off-loaded by the fish hatchery and made our way from there.

Our first side-trip ended abruptly at a gate, so we carried on further up the main road where Slime led us up an interesting washed-out trail that climbed quickly and eventually came out at a small frozen lake.

Heading back down to the main road, and after deciding we would just make it an easy day of riding, we promptly took another little detour off the main road, this time down a very rocky creek for a couple hundred yards or so. So much for the easy riding! This is where we should have taken pics, but we were too busy bashing skidplates and crawling over boulders to worry about cameras. Our reward for this little adventure came when we emerged onto a beautiful beach at the mouth of a creek where it empties into Harrison Lake. If it looks like the camera was on the ground for the first shot, that's because it almost was. We had to use a bit of a stump for a tripod, then run like hell to get into the pic and beat the timer.

After having lunch on the beach, we made our way back to the main road (not back up the creek, we found an easier way out!) and carried on up to the Hale Creek turnoff. I was havin fun with the deep cross ditches down this road, which led back down to the lake and what we think was the "Fool's Run" 4x4 guys. Didn't stop to chat as there was a lotta boozin' and shootin' goin on there. Back up at the main road we decided to make a run for 20 Mile Bay. After playing around on the beach, we took a break and soaked up the sun for a while. By then it was getting late so we decided to head back; it was a nice lazy cruise all the way back to the trucks. Quite a change of pace from the gnarly riding of recent weekends, and except for Richs' muddied-up jacket (I'll let him tell that story) we all arrived back DRY for a change!
