Scouting Chehalis IIHarrison AreaJanuary 25/04 Written and photographed by Paul Mitchell The day started out in the usual fashion with me following Bruce (always safer that way) out to Chehalis to meet up with Jim Moir and Mike (TheHouse). The plan was to go to the end of the lake, and get up into the watershed on the left fork before the bridge. However, Jim took a left after only about 8 kms up the main road. We always blast by this trail, and it turned out to be a great ride and we spent nearly all day on the differant forks, each ending up at great view spots! We kept on the main old logging road until we hit snow, and being so warm the machines dug right through and bogged down. If there's a trail that Jim just has to try, Mike was more than willing to follow. It does make for good photography though.
We came down and took the first right fork and found a burnt Ford Explorer, so Jim took the VIN for reporting purposes. Again, we went as far as we could. The road still continued on, and we plan to explore it further when it becomes passable. We were treated to a spectacular view overlooking Harrison Mills, Harrison Lake, and the Fraser Valley.
On the way back, we took the next right fork. It crossed over a bridge and headed up the other side of the valley. We thought we could link up to Margaret Pass as we were at 1400m and it looked like it was just around the next bend. We would see it, but we were frustrated AGAIN! None of these road seemed to link up to any others to make a round trip.
After having lunch and getting some more pics of the boys playing in the snow, we headed down and checked out couple of side trails which didn't amount to much. We arrived back at the trucks around 15:30h with no broken machines.
PS: It pays to lead sometimes, as Jim found a twoonie and a folding camp saw on the trail! |
